5 Ways To Overcome The Dreaded "Producers Block"

Lets face it,ALL of us have had creative blocks of some sort.At some point your work process is going to get derailed and you're going to run into "producers block",the music producers version of writers block

Oh Almighty Wordplay Metzger,How Do I Overcome This???

Well fellow musician,Im glad you asked. To help out the pther producers out there, here is a list of my top 5 ways to over come that creative hurdle:

  • GET ORGANIZED
About 90% of the time I have producers block it's due to this issue. Most of the time it isn't that I don't have new ideas,it's just that I don't know how to express it yet.Don't get me wrong,I love the feeling of just sitting down and making a banger out of nowhere, but figuring out how you want the track to sound in the end is always a good first step. This gives your project direction and helps you figure out what you're next move should be
  • WORK THROUGH IT
Not every beat you make is going to be a classic.I repeat-NOT EVERY BEAT YOU MAKE IS GOING TO BE A CLASSIC.The sooner you humble yourself and understand this, the easier it'll be to work through these creative dry spells.Sometimes you just need to work through that shitty beat to get it out of your system and get you used to finishing projects again. And besides,no one has to hear it...right?
  • USE NEW SOUNDS
Switching up drum kits, using new VSTs,playing around with new instruments-All of these can help.Exploring sounds you've never used before is a guaranteed way to spark a new musical idea
  • CHANGE WORK FLOW
Always make melodies first?Make a drum pattern first instead
Do you always sample?Try making a beat from scratch

Chaning your workflow helps in the same way using new sounds does.Altering your creation process forces you to work in a way you're not used to,this can breed some interesting results

  • COLLABORATE
Sometimes musicians get so caught up in their own hype that they forget how much fun it is to collaborate.A lot of times it's just cool to work with someone who has the same passion you do.You can learn some of their production skills and they'll probably find ways to improve your tracks that you may have missed

Iam by no means a super producer, these are just things that have always helped me.
